Could AI change the way we date?

In the realm of modern romance, navigating the world of dating apps can be both exciting and daunting. To help ease the challenges of this medium, the dating industry has been revolutionising the dating experience by using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Though AI has been incorporated in more aspects of daily life than we can count – even before the likes of ChatGPT and Google Gemini – with personalised recommendations from online streaming services, ‘for you’ curated Spotify playlists, predictive text while messaging. We’ve been used to it without even fully knowing what it is.

AI already exists on some dating apps. On Bumble, AI suggests opening lines for starting conversations, On Hinge, AI is behind the ‘Standouts’ feature. And, on Tinder, AI is used when you set your profile to show your best photo first.

Match Group (the company behind Tinder and Hinge) plans to enhance their AI use this year. From helping you pick the best pictures for your profile, and even all the way to helping you send that first message.

For Tinder and Hinge, Match Group are currently working on ways to enhance the use of AI when users are setting up or editing their profiles, by helping them curate their photos and bios to better showcase who they are.

They are also planning to put in place a generative AI to encourage more effective and authentic bios and prompts to improve the quality of user profiles and hopefully an improved outcome for users.

Using AI, Match Group are also hoping to improve the matches users get. They expect their apps to provide AI-driven advice, highlight users’ shared interests, and offer practical tools to enhance the matching experience. So, the plan is for AI to learn user behaviours and then the existing matching algorithms will become more refined which, in turn, should result in more positive user outcomes.

Tinder is already testing an AI-powered photo selector, which will help users choose higher quality profile photos in an instant

It’s not just online that they’re looking for uses for AI.
